TUESDAY March 18, 2025 |TheNewsDESK

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over an emergency meeting with principal officers of the National Assembly and top security chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as tensions escalate in Rivers State.

The meeting follows growing concerns over political instability in the oil-rich state, where a standoff between factions loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara has intensified.

Lawmakers aligned with Wike are reportedly pushing for Fubara’s impeachment.

While the official agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed, it is widely believed to center on the unfolding political crisis in the state.

Among those in attendance at the high-level meeting are the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele are attending.

Also sighted arriving for the meeting were the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Adeola Ajayi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed.

The meeting also follows a pipeline explosion that rocked the Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo Community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The blast, which occurred late Monday near the Bodo-Bonny Road, has further heightened concerns over security and stability in the oil-rich region.
