Akwa Ibom State has created four additional ministries, bringing the total number to 27 as part of efforts to strengthen the government’s machinery.

The new ministries include those of humanitarian affairs, science and digital economy, youth development, as well as sports.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has been split into two separate ministries with two separate commissioners.

The new ministries became known when the portfolios of the newly sworn-in commissioners were assigned by Governor Umo Eno soon after members of the state executive council were inaugurated.

Dr Frank Ekpenyong is the commissioner for the digital economy and has already resumed duties with a tour of the ministry to assess its facilities.

Dr. Ekpenyong emphasized the ministry’s role in driving the state’s digital economy, reaffirmed the governor’s vision for a fully ICT-compliant workforce, and encouraged staff to embrace innovation.

Until his appointment, he was in charge of the Governor’s Information, Communication and Technology Directorate.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has Princess Emem Emmanuel Ibanga as the Commissioner.

The 27-man Executive Council has four women and nine returning members of the cabinet.

“Our focus is not to have a cabinet for war but one to build bridges of peace and deliver to the people the dividends of democracy,” Eno had said.

While veteran sports journalist and administrator Paul Bassey heads the Ministry of Sports as commissioner, the Ministry of Youth Development has Ekerette Paul Ekanem as its commissioner.
