The House of Representatives has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps to arrest and prosecute individuals using fake vehicle number plates as part of efforts to curb rising criminal activities in the country, ThePUNCH reports.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Matthew Nwogu, who represents Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency of Imo State, during Thursday’s plenary session.
Highlighting the significance of vehicle number plates in identifying vehicles and aiding security agencies in tracking suspects, Nwogu referenced a Vanguard report of February 7, 2025.
The report quoted the FRSC Lagos Sector Commander as stating that most fake number plates used in crimes bear the tags of reputable institutions, including the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, and the National Association of Nigerian Students.
He noted that criminal activities such as ‘one chance’ robberies and kidnappings were often linked to vehicles with fake plates, with many victims suffering tragic fates at the hands of criminals.
Expressing concern over the security threat posed by these illegal plates, the Labour Party lawmaker stressed the urgency of a nationwide crackdown.
“The House is concerned that some number plates bearing the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, National Association of Nigerian Students, and other government agencies are, according to the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, not registered in the Nigeria Vehicle Registration database,” he stated.
Following a voice vote, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the motion.
In its resolution, the House directed the FRSC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, to intensify efforts to arrest users of fake number plates and track down their manufacturers for prosecution.
Additionally, the House urged both agencies to ensure that only vehicles with registered plates found in the Nigeria Vehicle Registration Database are permitted to ply the roads.
