Mojisola Meranda, speaker of the Lagos State House of assembly, has denied reports that she has resigned from her position, AriseTv reports.
Speculation about Meranda’s resignation surfaced after an online report claimed she had stepped down. A circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly issued by the speaker, also made rounds on social media, further fuelling the rumours.
However, Segun Ajiboye, her chief press secretary, dismissed the claim on Wednesday, stating that Meranda remains in office.
“I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from,” Ajiboye said.
Tensions ran high at the assembly complex on Monday as security was tightened ahead of plenary. Police officers and task force personnel were deployed inside and outside the premises amid reports that the speaker’s office had been sealed.
In response to the speculation, lawmakers moved to express their support for Meranda’s leadership. Oladipo Ajomale, representing Oshodi-Isolo constituency 2, introduced a motion during plenary, leading to the house passing a vote of confidence in her.
Meanwhile, Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted speaker, has continued to challenge his removal, arguing that due process was not followed and insisting he remains the legitimate speaker.
