NOA Reels Out Precautionary Measures Against Extreme Heat In Akwa Ibom

TUESDAY February 18, 2025 | TheNewsDESK

As the hot weather experience in Akwa Ibom increases, the National Orientation Agency, NOA, has issued public health protocols to forestall complications that could result in death, DailyPost reports.

There has been an unusual heat during this dry season, which experts say may last for a couple of weeks.

The state director of NOA, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, in a statement in Uyo on Tuesday, advised the people to drink plenty of water regularly and limit their intake of alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

According to the agency, “People should also avoid outdoor activities between 1 pm and 4 pm. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing; use hats, umbrellas, or sunglasses when outside,” he said.

Mkpoutom also stressed that people should ensure good ventilation in their homes and workplaces, adding that fans, cool showers, and air-conditioning facilities should also be used.

The agency, while advising against bush burning and improper disposal of cigarette butts, warned that flammable materials should be avoided.

“Protect vulnerable groups. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, while the elderly and invalids should stay cool and hydrated.”

On food, the agency advised that people should eat light and nutritious meals, eat healthy and balanced meals to avoid deficiencies that may weaken the body from fighting off heat-related illnesses.

According to the agency, symptoms of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, confusion, and fainting, which it said could indicate exhaustion or heatstroke.

It advised that people with these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
