Angry youths have burnt down a Police Division in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State following the alleged death of a young man in police custody, PlatinumPost reports.
The incident, which took place on Saturday evening, reportedly sparked widespread protests after news spread that the deceased had been subjected to severe torture while detained.
Sources in the border community, which lies between Ondo and Edo states, revealed that the unrest was linked to an earlier confrontation on Valentine’s Day. Outraged by the young man’s alleged mistreatment, protesters gathered and marched toward the police division.
One eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the demonstrators overwhelmed security personnel at the station before setting it on fire.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that additional officers had been deployed to the area.
She added that Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi was en route to Ifon to assess the situation and restore calm.
