The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has assured Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Akwa Ibom and other states in the region of its continued commitment to their welfare and well-being, Vanguard reports.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, gave this assurance in Uyo while addressing participants during the donation of mobility and hearing aids in commemoration of the International Day of PWDs. The event was themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons With Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Speaking through the NDDC Commissioner representing Akwa Ibom State, Apostle Abasiandikan Robert Nkono, Ogbuku reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to inclusivity and empowerment.

“The NDDC is committed to the welfare of all Persons With Disabilities in Akwa Ibom State and the Niger Delta. That is why we are here today—to encourage and support you,” he said.

He emphasized that the Commission had consistently championed PWD-related initiatives and assured that such efforts would continue.

“This is not the first time NDDC is holding this programme in Akwa Ibom State, and it will not end today. We will continue to prioritize the welfare and well-being of PWDs,” he added.

Ogbuku further pledged to present the participants’ request for the implementation of a 5% employment quota for PWDs at the next Board meeting, urging them to remain cooperative for mutual benefits.

Special Assistant to the Governor on PWDs, Ms. Nnene Bassey, lauded the NDDC for its donations, assuring that the beneficiaries would make proper use of the equipment.

“For the first time in Akwa Ibom, PWDs have come out in large numbers for an NDDC programme. We appreciate our state representative and the Commission for making this possible. We hope this collaboration continues to ensure inclusivity,” she said.

NDDC State Director, Mrs. Anthonia Akpan, commended the impressive turnout despite the short notice, while lectures on Leadership Skills, Mental Health, and The Importance of Wellness and Sports were delivered during the event.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to NDDC for the support, including Otobong Friday Umoren and Agnes Maxwell Victor, who were among the 20 recipients of wheelchairs.

Other donated equipment included 30 pairs of crutches, 30 hearing aids, 30 magnifying glasses, and 30 walking frames.
