The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has reaffirmed its commitment to regulating the production and distribution of herbal medicine products in Nigeria.

The NAFDAC, North-West Zonal Director, Shamsudeen Mani, gave the assurance during a press conference organised by the National Association of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners and the United Nations Federation of International Alternative, Scientific Tradomedical and Religion Organizations, held in Kaduna.

Speaking, the NAFDAC Rep said the agency had implemented measures to ensure quality control in the herbal medicine sector.

Mani emphasised NAFDAC’s dedication to making high-quality herbal medicines accessible to Nigerians.

He also noted that the agency was exploring strategies for the incubation and development of herbal medicine products.

“NAFDAC has put in place measures to facilitate and control the herbal medicine products,” Mani said

Speaking at the conference, the National President of NANTMP, Dr Shaba Maikudi, asserted the association’s commitment to ensuring that herbal products are safe and efficient.

The Africa Continental Coordinator for the UNFIA in Nigeria, Prof. Olumuyiwa Babalola urged the traditional medicine practitioners to adhere strictly to stipulated NAFDAC guidelines in production of herbal remedies.

He also emphasized the importance of integrating traditional medicine into modern healthcare systems, stressing that collaboration among all stakeholders is crucial for achieving credibility and wider acceptance of herbal treatments.
