Chief Olabode George, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has warned that the party faces a disastrous outing in the 2027 general elections unless it resolves its internal crisis and takes decisive action against those undermining its unity.
Speaking at a press conference at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos on Friday, the former PDP Deputy National Chairman lamented the party’s current state, attributing it to self-inflicted leadership struggles.
“We’ve found ourselves in this situation due to a self-inflicted crisis. We must bury our individual ambitions now and prevent the PDP from crumbling,” George stated.
George condemned the ongoing dispute over the party’s national secretary position, describing it as a national embarrassment.
He criticized the violent invasion of the PDP secretariat during the 79th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja, where thugs allegedly disrupted proceedings.
“What happened on Wednesday was horrific and unacceptable. Thugs storming our party’s sacred premises is a disgrace to democracy,” he said.
The PDP stalwart accused certain disloyal members of engineering the party’s downfall, calling for disciplinary action.
He stressed that the party’s founding fathers prioritized unity and national interest over personal ambition, warning that current leaders were betraying those values.
George urged PDP leaders to mediate peace between opposing factions immediately.
However, he insisted that those unwilling to embrace unity should be shown the way out to protect the party’s integrity.
“PDP must not become an ‘Agbero’ party. We have rules, and anyone working against our collective interests should be disciplined or expelled,” he asserted.
He warned that internal sabotage could jeopardize PDP’s electoral chances in 2027, adding that the party must act decisively to avoid political irrelevance.
Beyond party affairs, George addressed Nigeria’s economic struggles, urging President Bola Tinubu to implement policies that alleviate hardship and ensure economic stability before 2026, when political campaigns for 2027 will intensify.
He also raised concerns about global political shifts, particularly the potential return of Donald Trump as U.S. President, which he said could reshape international dynamics.
“A new world order is emerging, and if not carefully handled, it may escalate into global conflicts,” he cautioned.
In a strong message to PDP leadership, George emphasized that no individual was above party discipline. He urged leaders to act swiftly to restore order and unity within the party.
“A divided house cannot stand. PDP must remove the snakes within or face disaster in 2027,” he warned.
