|SPORTS| The Akwa Ibom State Football Association has expressed deep sadness over the passing of former Green Eagles goalkeeper Moses Effiong (MON), who died on Sunday, 26 January 2025, in the United States after a long illness, SportsRATION reports.
Effiong, a key member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad, was widely respected for his contributions to football both as a player and coach. He played for clubs like New Nigerian Bank before transitioning into coaching, where he helped develop young talents, notably at Akwa United FC, leading them to the NPFL title in 2021.
Reacting to his death, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Mr Samuel Umoh, described Effiong’s passing as a huge loss to the state and Nigerian football.
“We have lost a national treasure and an outstanding ambassador of Akwa Ibom State. Moses Effiong’s contributions to football will never be forgotten. He was a symbol of dedication and excellence, inspiring generations of goalkeepers and footballers across Nigeria. His legacy will remain indelible in our hearts,” Umoh stated.
The Akwa Ibom FA joins the rest of the nation in mourning the legendary goalkeeper. Further details about his funeral will be announced by his family.
