The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has lauded the visionary leadership President Bola Tinubu and the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, for their groundbreaking initiative in launching a new refinery in Nigeria, the VanguardNews reports.
President of the Senate NANS Headquarters, Akinteye Afeez Babatunde, gave the commendation during the 86th senate sitting of NANS at Lagos State University, where members acknowledged the transformative potential of this development for the nation’s energy landscape.
According to him, the new refinery’s operational readiness marks a monumental shift in Nigeria’s approach to petroleum refining, addressing long-standing issues such as dependence on imported fuel and the need for affordable energy solutions.
“By fostering local production, this initiative promises not only to stabilize fuel prices but also to generate employment opportunities, thereby enhancing economic resilience,” he said.
NANS recognised the achievement as a reflection of President Tinubu’s proactive governance and the effective management of the NNPCL, whose commitment to executing vital infrastructural projects showcases a forward-thinking approach to national development.
The association stressed that the refinery is not just a facility; it symbolised a renewed hope for energy independence and economic growth.
“In line with its advocacy for student empowerment and national progress, NANS plans to conduct an on-site visit to the refinery. This visit aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the refinery’s operations and its broader implications for national development.”
“NANS intends to engage with the refinery’s leadership to explore collaboration opportunities that could lead to skill acquisition programs and job placements for Nigerian youth in the energy sector.”
Meanwhile, NANS called upon citizens from all walks of life to rally behind the NNPCL and the federal government.
“While the rehabilitation of this refinery represents a significant stride forward, realizing its full potential will require a united effort across the country. Together, we can cultivate a sustainable energy future and drive economic growth,” he said.
