South Korean President Yoon Impeached By Parliament Vote |SituationReport|

By Idorenyin UMOREN
With inputs from Agency reports

South Korea’s parliament has voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, with 204 lawmakers backing the motion.

This decision immediately suspends Yoon from office, transferring presidential duties to Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who will serve as acting president.

However, the impeachment vote does not guarantee Yoon’s permanent removal. The Constitutional Court must now hold a trial, a process that could take weeks. For the impeachment to be upheld, at least six of the court’s nine members must vote in favour of sustaining the motion.

If the court upholds the impeachment, Yoon will be removed from office, triggering a presidential election within 60 days. Until then, the nation remains in a state of political uncertainty, with Yoon’s presidency hanging in the balance.
