Airport workers in Akwa Ibom State celebrated their 2024 International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO) Day at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo yesterday, honoring the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Eno, for his exceptional contributions to the state ‘s aviation infrastructure.
Addressing the participants on the theme “Safe Skies, Sustainable Future” the Chairman of the Ibom Airport Development Company Dr. Iniobong Ene Essien, disclosed that the theme served as a reminder of the importance of collaboration, innovation, and dedication to safety in the aviation sector.
Essien lauded the state Governor for his unwavering commitment to advancing the state’s aviation sector, noting that such progress would not have been possible without the governor’s support and vision for growth.
Mr. Uwem Ekanem, IADCL MD/CEO, represented by Engr. Dr. Aniema Ukpong, the Manager of the Victor Attah International Airport, reflected on the safety milestones achieved at the airport, expressing gratitude for the consistent safety standards maintained throughout the years.
Ekanem attributed much of the success to the collaborative efforts between the airport workers and the state government under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno.
The International Civil Aviation Day which was observed globally, celebrates the essential role of aviation in fostering safety, security, and sustainable development worldwide.
This year’s commemoration spotlighted the importance of the aviation sector in driving global economic growth, with a particular focus on innovation, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Mr. Ukeme Macaulay Utuk, Chairman of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) at Victor Attah International Airport applauded Governor Umo Eno for his initiative to review the working conditions of aviation staff.
Utuk stressed that technological advancements in aviation, such as collision avoidance systems and safety protocols, are essential in ensuring air transport safety.
However, he emphasized that these advancements should be supported by continuous training for aviation personnel to stay up-to-date with global best practices.
Utuk also disclosed the environmental challenges faced by the aviation sector, pointing out that CO2 emissions, noise pollution, and air quality issues are primarily the result of aircraft and airport operations.
He mentioned that while aviation workers are not the source of these challenges, their involvement in technological adaptations and safety practices plays a crucial role in mitigating these environmental impacts.
He called for continued collaboration with the global aviation community to address sustainability goals and promote greener practices.
On the subject of worker welfare, Utuk urged for improved working conditions, fair compensation, and effective communication between workers and management.
He emphasized that motivated and well-trained personnel are vital to the continued success of the aviation sector, as they directly impact safety and operational efficiency.
Utuk also addressed the infrastructure challenges facing Nigerian airports, specifically the lack of modern facilities. He called on the government and stakeholders to prioritize upgrading airport amenities to enhance passenger satisfaction and operational effectiveness.
The celebration of International Civil Aviation Day in Akwa Ibom served as a reminder of the collective efforts of the state’s aviation workers and the pivotal role of Governor Umo Eno in fostering a thriving aviation environment.
The event highlighted the continuous development of the sector, the importance of worker contributions, and the ongoing commitment to improving aviation infrastructure for the benefit of both the workers and the people of Akwa Ibom.
The workers ceased the event to honour Governor Umo Eno’s impactful contributions to the growth of the state’s aviation sector, featured a fitness walk, vibrant dance performances, and speeches that underscored the remarkable achievements made in the state’s aviation infrastructure.

The special guest of honor, Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kufre-Abasi Edidem acknowledged Governor Umo Eno’s role in transforming Akwa Ibom’s aviation landscape, emphasizing that the governor’s initiatives have had a profound impact on the state’s economic development, regional connectivity, and tourism potential.
Other attendees that graced the event included Comrade Sunny James, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Chapter; IADCL/VAIA Heads of Departments. Who all lauded the governor for his continuous efforts to enhance the airport’s infrastructure, improve safety measures, and increase flight operations to foster better connectivity within the region.
