Akwa Ibom State government has resolved that non academic staff of all state government tertiary institutions in the state should retired at the age of 65 years as their counterparts in the academics.
The Sun newspaper reports that this resolution has put paid to controversies in state government institutions which led to threats of strike by Non Academic staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP) and other unions.
According to the Commissioner for Information Ini Ememobong, the decision to approve 65 years retirement age for the Non Academic staff of state owned tertiary institutions was was part of the state policy updates resolved at State Executive Council meeting held yesterday at Government House Uyo.
Ememobong who made excerpts of the State Executive Council Meeting available to Journalists in Uyo on Wednesday said the retirement age for the non academic staff in the state owned tertiary institutions will be effective from January next year.
“The Council approved the implementation of a 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff of state-owned tertiary institutions, effective 1st January 2025.”
It would be recalled that last month , Non Academic Staff Union Polytechnics , Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic , Ikot Osurua chapter had threatened to embark on indefinite strike action if government will not clearly adopt the the required 65 years as the retirement age for their members.
