An armed robbery suspect, Godwin Emmanuel, 23, has disclosed that he stole a policeman’s mobile phone on his way to the station to call his family members, the Vanguard newspaper reports.
Emmanuel, who was arrested by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Osun State Police Command along with two others over robbery, said he stole the phone inside the police van en route to the police station and removed the SIM card.
According to him, the intent behind his actions was to use the phone to call his family while in custody, but the owner came searching for it inside the cell, and it was found on him.
“I was arrested for armed robbery in Ile-Ife. When I was being transported to the Police Command in Osogbo, I stole a phone inside the police patrol van. I didn’t know it was a police phone. I told the police not to be angry with me; I don’t know when I did that.
“I took the phone into the police cell without them knowing. I removed the SIM card because I wanted to use the phone to call my people since they don’t know I have been arrested for armed robbery. I have been here for about two months.
“They later came to search me in the cell where I was and discovered the phone on me. Please tell them to forgive me. I won’t do it again. I beg you, make una forgive me. I came from Ikorodu in Lagos.”
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, while briefing newsmen during the parade of criminals in Osogbo, said Emmanuel, along with two others, Olajide Kareem, 28, and Mike Emmanuel, 33, were arrested in connection with an armed robbery and rape incident along the Ilesa-Osu express road, during which one of the victims was raped.
She added that Emmanuel and Mike were arrested in Ikorodu, Lagos State, from where they came to Osun to perpetrate the act.
“The suspects were arrested in Ikorodu, Lagos State, while others are still at large. Emmanuel and Mike have confessed to belonging to the armed robbery gang and will be prosecuted after diligent investigation,” she added.
