A man, who claims to be a native of Anambra State, was, yesterday, rescued by Police from being lynched by a mob, at Itam Timber Market, in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where he was found with a carton containing his son’s corpse, Vanguard newspaper reports.

Vanguard gathered that inquisitive traders got suspicious and raised the alarm when the man whose name could not be ascertained at press time headed towards the market waste receptacle carrying a carton on his head.

The man was accompanied by two other male children (minors) when the mob at the market accosted him.

“Some angry market men held the man, brought down the carton on his head and discovered it contained the lifeless body of a child (boy) naked but neatly wrapped with torn clothes,” an eyewitness said.

But responding to the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom Command, Timfon John, said investigation revealed the man didn’t kill his son, even as she said investigation was still ongoing.

Her words, “On the Itam incident, what happened is that a father of three boys was intercepted by the Police at Itam with a dead boy and two living boys.

“Upon investigation, the man told the Police that all three boys are his. And that in his tradition deceased male are not buried outside their community. So, he was taking the dead son to the village in Anambra State to be buried.

“The Police had since deposited the dead boy in the morgue and investigations are ongoing. Please note that the said man didn’t kill the boy.”
