Brigadier General M.A. Sadiq, commander of the 3 Brigade in Kano, has been detained in a military police guardroom in Abuja due to serious allegations involving the diversion of rice palliatives and the sale of military equipment.

According to sources who spoke under the condition of anonymity revealed that the Nigerian Defence Headquarters had provided rice to various brigades nationwide for distribution to soldiers as a form of palliative support.

Reports indicate that the Defence Headquarters distributed rice to Nigerian soldiers on at least three occasions, but General Sadiq allegedly only shared 5 kg bags with the soldiers on one occasion and sold off the remaining supplies.

In addition to the rice scandal, it is alleged that General Sadiq also took military equipment, including a MIKANO heavy-duty generator from the Military Training Camp in Falgore, Kano, and sold it to scrap metal dealers.

Following these allegations, General Sadiq has been replaced by Brigadier General A.M. Tukur, a former registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

“Following these allegations, Brigadier General Sadiq has been detained in guardroom and is facing interrogation by the special investigation branch of military police in Abuja.

“He was first invited to Abuja for questioning, and immediately ordered to be locked in the military police guardroom. There are mounting allegations against him.

“Already Brigadier General A.M. Tukur, who previously served as the Registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, has been appointed to take charge of the brigade.

“Full scale investigations into the matter are ongoing. He will likely face charges at the court-martial,” the source added.

Spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, didn’t respond to calls and SMS sent to his known telephone number at the time of filing this report.
