Head of Media and Advocacy Unit of the Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission, EARCOM, Rev. Osondu Ahirika PhD, has explained in a chat with newsmen that voter ignorance or low voter education fuel apathy and can mar any elections, if not addressed especially at the grassroots.

Responding to critics of the daily nuggets on the build-up to the October 2024 Akwa Ibom State Local Government Election, issued by EARCOM, arguing that there is no need for such a campaign as Election processes are flawed in the country, Ahirika said, EARCOM will never be deterred by such cynicism, arguing that voter and civic education are necessary to ensure that all constituents—men and women alike—understand their rights, their political system, the electoral processes and how to cast their votes to reduce void votes.

Ahirika explained that EARCOM is concerned about negative trends that bedevil elections in the country including social vices such as vote buying, thuggery, bloodshed, kidnapping, violence, ballot box snatching or stuffing, voter intimidation, arson, attack on politicians, the electorate, Election officials, and offices before, during, and after elections.

These challenges he said, justify EARCOMs unrelenting public enlightenment campaigns through social media platforms, road shows, engagement with stakeholders, print and electronic media, to ensure a mindset shift and reorientation on proper electioneering culture for nation-building.

While arguing that producers of soap and detergents do not stop production simply because things continue to get dirty, Dr Ahirika posited that EARCOM will not back down on her mandate of mass sensitisation campaigns to help nurture socially responsible citizens.

He lauded Governor Umo Eno for creating a level playing field for all political parties to participate in the electoral process, observing that the integrity of the process can be seen from the fact that 16 political parties are reported to be fielding candidates for the upcoming Local Government Polls.

EARCOM, he disclosed looks forward to collaborating with the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, the security agencies and Election observers or civil society groups to ensure a credible, free and fair election. | SituationReport
