Nigerian powerlifter breaks world record, wins gold at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Nigerian athlete Onyinyechi Mark has made history by breaking the world record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Mark lifted an impressive 145kg, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian, Lucy Ejike.

With just one lift remaining, Mark has effectively secured Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games. Her nearest rival will attempt a final lift of 138kg, while Mark is set to make a final attempt of 147kg to further extend her record.

Nigeria has long been a formidable presence in Paralympic powerlifting and athletics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the nation earned ten medals, including four golds.

Nigerian athletes, including Ejike and Bose Omolayo, have consistently set world records and achieved significant victories.

The continued success of Nigerian para-athletes underscores the country’s strong commitment to supporting and nurturing its Paralympic talent.
