MTN closes offices nationwide amid subscribers outrage

Telecom giant MTN has decided to shut all its stores and service centers across Nigeria in response to significant backlash from its subscribers.

The decision follows an incident on Sunday when the network provider blocked several lines due to discrepancies between subscribers’ National Identification Numbers and their SIM registrations.

The situation escalated when a viral video showed a mob vandalizing an MTN office in FESTAC Town, Lagos. The footage depicted a large crowd of disgruntled customers attacking the company’s office in protest.

In response to the unrest, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that local authorities had managed to restore order and calm in the affected area.

On Tuesday, MTN announced via social media that all its shops across Nigeria would remain closed for the day. The company addressed customers with a statement: “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024.” (PUNCH)
