At least 157 individuals have lost their lives in a series of landslides that struck south-western Ethiopia.
The catastrophe has left dozens more missing, according to a statement from a spokesperson for the civil protection authority on Tuesday.
According to reports, efforts to recover victims have been hindered by ongoing rainfall, complicating rescue operations.
The spokesman also expressed grave concerns, noting, “We are still recovering bodies, and unfortunately, the casualty count is expected to rise significantly.”
Reports indicate that another landslide occurred as hundreds gathered on Monday in a courageous attempt to aid those affected by the initial disaster.
The onset of heavy rains forced a temporary suspension of rescue efforts, further exacerbating the dire situation.
The affected region, known for its hilly terrain, is particularly vulnerable during the rainy season, when landslides are a recurring threat.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday when the area was first struck by mudslides, catching residents off guard and triggering a rapid response from emergency services.
Authorities continue to mobilize resources and manpower in a race against time to locate missing persons and provide support to affected communities.
As the region grapples with this calamity, efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and deliver essential aid to those in need.
