Security Guard Killed As Gunmen Attack Akwa Ibom Media Outfit

A security guard identified as Edet Obot was shot dead Friday night, while others escaped when gunmen launched a violent attack on the Akwa Ibom State Newspaper Corporation (AKNC), publishers of the Pioneer Newspaper, along Information Drive in Uyo.

The armed hoodlums stormed the premises of the corporate office of the State-owned media company, carting away some items amid sporadic gunshots.

Obot, who was among the security guards manning the media outfit, was hit by a bullet during the incident, leading to his death.

Properties carted away, according to a senior reporter with the newspaper, who would not want his name mentioned, included a generator, flat screen televisions, electric cables and other essential items.

The journalist expressed deep sadness over the death of the security guard even as he suspected insider collaboration with the robbers over the incident.

The phone calls by our correspondent to the General Manager of the Pioneer newspaper, Mr Umoette Umoette, on the development were not answered.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Timfon John, also could not be reached to react to the attack as at the time of filing this report on Monday.
