Nigeria battle old foes Cameroon in the round of 16 of the ongoing AFCON on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
It’s a replay of both sides clash in Egypt in the 2019 edition, when the Eagles beat the Indomitable Lions 3-2 in the round of 16.
Cameroon emerged as the Super Eagles opponents in a dramatic twist of events on Tuesday, beating Gambia 3-2 to confirm their place in the next round. They finished second in Group C behind Senegal just as Nigeria were also runners up in Group A behind Equatorial Guinea.
Nigeria booked their place in the round of 16 on Monday after a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in their last group game. However, Equatorial Guinea’s shock 4-0 rout of hosts Ivory Coast left Nigeria second in the group, as they eventually set up a date with their arch rivals.
The Eagles looked set for a date with Guinea in the second round but the Indomitable Lions turned their disastrous campaign — having managed just one point from their opening two matches — around at the Stade de la Paix, Bouaké, thanks to a late goal from Rennes defender Christopher Wooh.
Cameroon scored first through Toko Ekambi, but the Gambians responded with two goals to lead 2-1 until an unfortunate own goal by James Gomez levelled matters at 2-2 in the 87th minute.
Wooh then shot Cameroon into the next round in second place in the group, ahead of Guinea, who lost 2-0 against champions Senegal.
