Gov Umo Eno’s Arise Initiative: A New Dawn For Elderly Citizens In Akwa Ibom

By Ekemini James

In a bid to address the challenges faced by the elderly in our society and provide them with the needed support, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, in line with the Economic Development and Human Empowerment drive of the ARISE Agenda, has launched a meritorious initiative called the “Arise Initiative.”

This noble program, inspired by the seed of goodness previously sown by the First Lady of Nigeria, Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, who kick-started an Initiative called “Renewed Hope Initiative” where 250 elderly citizens in the state were recently given #100,000 each, aims to honour and support the elderly population in the Country.

The initiative which is also in support of the First Lady reinforces Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to ensuring that the well-being and dignified lives of our elderly citizens is a priority of the government by providing financial assistance to selected recipients across the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State. It also reflects a significant step towards acknowledging the invaluable contributions of our elders to the growth and development of the state.

Notably, Governor Umo Eno has placed strong emphasis on transparency throughout the process by entrusting the responsibility of selecting beneficiaries to the Transition Chairmen, and intends to hold them accountable in the event where the program does not reach the intended recipients.

To further ensure smooth implementation and management of the initiative, the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare has been directed by the Governor to oversee the program. This strategic approach highlights the importance the Governor places on our women and in their ability to make a positive impact.

Unarguably, the Arise Initiative for the Elderly will have profound impact on the lives of the selected recipients as the financial support provided will help alleviate some of the daily struggles faced by our elders, serving as a heartwarming reminder that their contributions to society are not forgotten, and that they are valued by their community and the government.

It therefore behoves on every citizen of the state to join hands to enthrone a society and a culture that respects, values, and supports its elders. Let us unite, promote, and support this initiative which is poised to ensure that our beloved elders are truly honoured and appreciated.
