Hoodlums Vandalise UNILAG Bus, Steal Convocation Gowns

The University of Lagos has suspended the distribution of post-graduate academic gowns for its 54th convocation ceremony after suspected hoodlums vandalised the bus where the gowns were kept.

The PUNCH reported that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, revealed that on Tuesday, 16, and Wednesday 17 January 2024, UNILAG would be graduating a total of 17,464 students out of which 10,578 would receive first degrees and 6,886 are postgraduate.

It was, however, learnt that the graduating students had paid the sum of N15,000 each to obtain the gowns.

The management of the university School of Post-Graduate Studies in a brief text message and mail sent to the students noted that the gowns which were already paid for by graduating students were stolen from the bus.

The message read, “Dear graduate, we regret to inform you that the distribution of SPGS academic gowns is now suspended.

Sadly, the remaining gowns were stolen, and our bus was vandalised this afternoon.”

PUNCH Online learnt that the students had lamented over the delay and their inability to collect the gown having made their payments.

A lawyer, Malachy Odo, also confirmed that he received the notice from the school through a text message while reacting to the development on the X platform.

He wrote, “I paid 15k for convocation gown yesterday and this is what UNILAG just sent me. This country is not a real place.”
