Chelsea legend Mikel Obi hasn’t minced words in expressing his views on former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, labeling him as one of the worst coaches he encountered during his illustrious career.

In a candid revelation on his ObiOne podcast, Mikel painted a vivid picture of Oliseh’s reign, characterizing it as a tumultuous period filled with confusion, bitterness, and jealousy.

Oliseh, a revered figure in Nigerian football history, transitioned from being a stellar player to the coaching realm in 2016 when he assumed the role of Super Eagles coach. However, his managerial stint was short-lived, marred by controversy and an early dismissal from the position.

Mikel recounted the turbulent start of Oliseh’s tenure, recalling a confrontational moment with the coach. “He came straight at us and Elderson Echiejile, and he said a few things. He said he heard there was a lot of player power with us,” Mikel shared on the podcast. The incident escalated into a heated argument, leading to the exclusion of veteran goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama from the team.

Reflecting on Oliseh’s coaching style, Mikel didn’t mince words, asserting, “He (Oliseh) had absolutely no clue of how a manager is.” The Chelsea legend elaborated on the coach’s shortcomings, stating, “He was just confused because he just came in and destroyed the team togetherness.”

Oliseh’s tenure was marked by an apparent lack of understanding among the players, with Mikel emphasizing that the coach “did not know what he was doing.” The podcast revelations painted a damning picture of Oliseh’s coaching abilities, with Mikel describing him as “easily the worst manager I played under.”

Post his role as Super Eagles coach, Oliseh’s coaching journey took him to Dutch side Fortuna Sittard and German fifth-tier side SV Straelen. However, both stints ended under controversial circumstances, and as of 2022, he has not secured a new coaching position. Mikel’s candid insights provide a rare glimpse into the challenges faced by players under Oliseh’s management, shedding light on a turbulent chapter in Nigerian football history.
