The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced on 22 December that they were responsible for an attack against the city of Eilat in southern Israel and that the attack was carried out in response to Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people.
The statement by the resistance group said: “In line with our approach to resisting the occupation, in support of our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has hit a target in Umm al-Rashrash, in occupied Eilat, with appropriate weapons.”
Israeli media reported that the Islamic Resistance of Iraq launched a drone attack on the southern city but that it was intercepted by Jordan within Jordanian airspace.
Lebanon’s Al-Manar also reported that Jordan protected Israel by intercepting an incoming drone strike coming from Iraq.
Jordan’s army has yet to publish a statement to confirm reports of their actions against Iraqi resistance operations.
The Iraqi resistance has also been confronting US forces in Iraq and parts of Syria as an act of solidarity with the Palestinians in a multi-fronted war against Israel.
In a statement released in early December by Abu Ali al-Askari, a senior official in the Kataib Hezbollah faction, said that the Iraqi resistance will continue to combat US forces in Iraq until no US personnel remain within its borders.
“Our jihadist operations against the US occupation will continue until the last soldier is removed from Iraq,” Askari said. “Any foolishness from the US enemy will be met with severe retaliatory measures and an expansion of operations.”
In October, Jordan’s army spokesperson Mustafa Hiyari asked the US to deploy Patriot air defense systems to bolster its border defense.
“The drones have become a threat on all our fronts,” Hiyari said.
Jordan is not the only Arab state to protect Israel. In October, the Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia had intercepted a Yemeni cruise missile headed toward Israel.
Resistance forces from Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq have taken up arms to fight in solidarity with the Palestinian people against Israel, a nation that has – in its short history – proven to be an enemy to each.
